📚 Reading and Writing Curriculum & Remediation Information

Pursuant to IC 20-26-5-44, the following information is provided for the 2025–2026 school year by Timothy L. Johnson Academies.

1. Adopted Reading and Writing Curriculum

The following reading and writing curricula have been adopted and implemented by grade level:

  • Kindergarten – Grade 5:
    HMH Into Reading
    Publisher: Houghton Mifflin Harcourt
  • Grades 6 – 8:
    HMH Into Literature
    Publisher: Houghton Mifflin Harcourt

2. Remedial and Supplemental Literacy Support

Timothy L. Johnson Academies provides layered literacy support and intervention services to scholars who demonstrate need based on benchmark and diagnostic data.

Students in Kindergarten through Grade 5 who require additional support receive intervention from a licensed literacy interventionist, with placement and instructional focus based on assessments such as:

  • NWEA MAP Growth
  • IREAD-3
  • Developmental Reading Assessment (DRA)
  • Classroom performance and observations

Remedial and supplemental reading instruction is available across Grades K–8 using the following resources:

  • Orton-Gillingham (Publisher: Brainspring, Inc.)
A multisensory, structured literacy approach used to address the needs of students with dyslexia and other reading challenges through direct, explicit instruction.
  • Heggerty Phonemic Awareness (Publisher: Heggerty)
A foundational phonemic awareness curriculum utilized in Grades K–2, designed to build essential early literacy skills.
  • IXL Language Arts (Publisher: IXL Learning)
A digital platform that delivers personalized, skill-based ELA practice aligned to Indiana Academic Standards, implemented across Grades K–8.
  • SLANT System (Structured Language Training)
Offered as needed for scholars in Grades K–8, SLANT addresses the urgent need for inclusive and effective instruction for struggling readers, particularly those with dyslexia.
    • SLANT fills a critical gap by providing research-based, multisensory strategies.
    •  A structured, explicit framework that supports decoding, fluency, and comprehension.
    • SLANT supports equitable access to literacy for all learners, aligning with our mission of inclusive and responsive education.

All interventions are implemented using a tiered system of support (Tier 2 and Tier 3), with ongoing progress monitoring to adjust instruction based on individual growth.
